Would you like to slow life down? Do you crave deeper relationships and meaningful conversations? Do you sometimes feel isolated in a crowd? Are you seeking to be more present in your relationship with others?
College students are constantly surrounded by people, but don’t always feel connected. The average college student has 650 Facebook friends, yet almost 70% of college students report feeling very lonely at some point during the year. Conversations are a critical ground to develop empathy, belonging, and self-awareness, yet teens and young adults are 4-5 times more likely to text rather than call a friend.
Emerson’s REAL Talk trains and supports students to have meaningful face to face conversations, be present, speak their truth, and listen deeply. While cultivating this in-group experience, REAL Talk also cultivates transferable skills to enhance the student experience across campus, professionally and personally. REAL Talk participants attend a mandatory one-day training on October 1 that includes motivational interviewing, mindfulness, and facilitation skills sessions. REAL Talk Circles then meet weekly for 1 hour over 8 weeks, with a mid-program lunch and culminating celebration. Weekly meetings begin with a check-in and are then structured to provide open-ended inquiry on participant-generated topics, with facilitation rotated from week to week.
We welcome all returning and transfer Emerson sophomores through seniors to apply! New?first year students will have an opportunity to apply to participate in this program for their second semester.
We encourage?all Emersonians to participate! Past participants are also welcomed! Check back for application information for the 2018/2019 academic year!
