One-on-one counseling allows for a safe space to speak with a professional who can help you better understand your concerns and work with you to build skills to help overcome difficulties and have the best experience possible at Emerson College.
Individual counseling is a great place to begin talking about your concerns, including but not limited to the following:
- Family matters
- Roommate conflicts
- Alcohol or other drug use
- Academic performance
- Eating concerns/disorders
- Suicidal thoughts
- Adjusting to Emerson
The first step to get started with personal counseling is to call to schedule an “Triage” appointment. For this appointment, please come about 10?minutes early to complete some paperwork. During this meeting, your counselor will work with you to understand what?brought you into Emerson Counseling and Psychological Services (ECAPS) and make a plan moving forward. At the end of the first session, you and the counselor will discuss options for moving forward, either with brief counseling at ECAPS, a group that might be helpful, and/or a referral to a more appropriate agency. Sessions are usually about 25?minutes. ?If you and your counselor decide on brief counseling at ECAPS, you will then schedule an "Intake" appointment, during which?your counselor will ask more in depth questions about your history and experiences. ?If you decide on a referral for long-term or more regular appointments than we are able to offer, then your counselor will work with you to make sure you get connected to a clinician that fits well with you.?
