Each year, Emerson Stage presents one production dedicated as Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA). For our students, this production is a unique opportunity to work on theatrical pieces designed for young people. For our communities, it is an opportunity for an engaging, educational, and enjoyable field trip.
Emerson Stage reserves two performances of each TYA production specifically for school groups. These performances occur at 10:00 am on school days, and are filled with students visiting Emerson College with their classmates. In addition to the performance, we provide supplemental educational items, including a production study guide sent to the teachers before the performance date, post-show discussions?with members of our cast and crew, and (when available), visits to the participating schools.
This year’s TYA production is Flora & Ulysses, by Kate DiCamilo and adapted by John Glore. Recommended for students and families ages 6+, we will offer two sensory-friendly and four standard performances open to the public.?

Self-proclaimed cynic Flora Belle Buckman is ten years old and loves comic books. When she sees a squirrel about to be vacuumed up by her neighbor, she jumps into action to save him, like any good comic book hero would do. The squirrel, who she names Ulysses, emerges from the vacuum endowed with super powers of flight and poetry. In this heartfelt adaptation of Kate DiCamillo’s 2014 Newbery Medal winning novel, Flora, Ulysses and their friend William embark on adventures that solve the problems of the heart with love, courage and understanding.
