We believe?production and safety should go hand in hand. Knowing how to operate state-of-the-art gear safely and properly allows students to successfully achieve their artistic and educational goals.

Each semester, VMA runs workshops covering safe and efficient usage of lighting instruments, cameras such as the Sony F5, Canon C100 and Sony A7s. We also cover basic and advanced rigging and advanced camera dynamics technologies such as the Kessler Cinedrive, Fisher Model 11, Freefly Movi and Tiffen Steadicam. All workshops are held on a first come first serve basis with a cap at 18 students (this does not apply to the steadicam or any workshop held as part of a series).

Any questions regarding the workshop, contact?leonard_manzoatemerson [dot] edu (Lenny Manzo).

Workshops

SONY F5 WORKSHOP

Prerequisite: Basic Cinematography

Covers menu operations, Chroma subsampling, color bit depth, use with AXS-R5 4K recorder, the difference between S-log 2, S-log 3 and REC. 709, workflow, and downloading procedures. Upon completion of this workshop, students are eligible to use the Sony F5 for MFA, BFA, and potentially BA projects, depending on availability.

SONY F3 WORKSHOP

Prerequisite: Basic Cinematography

Covers menu operations, Chroma subsampling, color bit depth, use with PIX 240 recorder, the difference between S-log and regular video, workflow, and downloading procedures. Upon completion of this workshop, students are eligible to use the Sony F3 for MFA, BFA, and potentially BA projects, depending on availability.

SONY FS700 WORKSHOP

Prerequisite: Basic Cinematography

4k, slow motion, and RAW are just a few features that set the FS700 apart from the rest of the offerings at Emerson. In this workshop, we will go over the FS700 build and use with the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q recorder. Upon completion of this workshop, students are eligible to use the Sony FS700 for MFA, BFA, BA, and Motion Graphics projects, depending on availability.

SONY ALPHA 7S WORKSHOP

4K has never been so small! In this workshop, you will learn about the tremendously powerful A7s camera and its use with the 4K Atomos Shogun recorder. Upon completion of this workshop, students are eligible to use the Sony FS700 for MFA, BFA, BA, and Motion Graphics projects, depending on availability

SONY FS100 WORKSHOP

With the Sony FS100, you get the control of a super 35 image sensor and 4:2:2 color space with a simple to use form factor. This workshop will show you how to harness the unique features of this camera.

CANON C100 WORKSHOP

There's a new tool in the Emerson toolbox: The Canon C100. This camera takes all the good things about DSLRs and puts them into a more user-friendly digital motion picture camera. Great in low light, a wide exposure latitude in S-Log, and able to shoot 4:2:2 with an external recorder (4:2:0 without), the C100 is a great option for low budget filmmakers. Learn how to use C100 and its accessories in this workshop.

DIGITAL IMAGING

Prerequisite: Basic Cinematography

Shooting with professional grade digital cinema equipment requires professional grade tools. This workshop focuses on the role of the Digital Imaging Technician, their role on set and how to use tools like LUTS, Davnici Resolve, and waveforms to evaluate your image and prepare for post production.

RIGGING WORKSHOP I

Covers gripping and setting lights from a technical standpoint. Hands-on training with 12 X 12 overheads, hanging lights from ceilings and other rigging points, setting a backlight using a menace arm, dolly use, and some camera rigging.

RIGGING WORKSHOP II

In this workshop, you will learn advanced rigging for lighting and camera and Instructed on the use of the Fisher 11 camera dolly, the doorway dolly, and dolly track. It also covers overheads in highboy stands and from the grid. You will learn to hang lights from ceilings and other rigging points, with attention to cabling, as well as set a backlight using a menace arm. We will review the safe use and operation of the Genie lift.

HMI WORKSHOP

Covers the technical and aesthetic use of lights. Topics include HMI versus Tungsten, color correction, Par versus Fresnel, and the efficiency of HMI’s. Also covers system parts (cable, head, lenses) and problem solving.

KESSLER WORKSHOP

Covers the complete range of Kessler products including the Pocket Jib, Cineslider, K-Pod and Oracle motion control system.?

STEADICAM WORKSHOP

APPLY HERE

Covers the basics of how to build, balance, wear, and operate a Steadicam. Through use of a Steadicam, students can achieve smoothness in shots that mimic the human experience of moving through a space. The workshop is split up into (3) 3-hour sessions. Throughout the semester we will hold two info sessions about the use of the steadicam technology, but in order to become certified, you must apply using the form listed below.

Steadicam Academy

We will be accepting applications into the steadicam academy starting September 28th. Please check back for a link to the application.

MOVI WORKSHOP

The Freefly Movi is a revolutionary camera dynamics technology that utilizes a 3-axis brushless gimbal to eliminate movement from the X & Y plane of a handheld shot. We will be unveiling a two-part workshop series about this technology later in the Fall 2015 semester

CHIP CHARTS

Learn to use camera test charts to your advantage; to gather information about your cameras native ISO, color gamut and also to evaluate them using a waveform/ vector scope.

LOGS, LUTS?AND LATITUDE

Learn how to leverage flat picture profiles in order to capture the most detail from your cinema camera.

INTRO AUDIO WORKSHOP

Covers the physicalities of sound, tools used to record clean audio, signal flow, and microphone placement.
